How to Remove a Broken Light Bulb

When a light bulb breaks, it can be frustrating and time-consuming to replace. This guide will show you how to remove a broken light bulb without any tools. Broken bulbs usually have two ends that are joined together by a thin metal wire called the filament. You may need to twist or pull on the end of the filaments until they come free from the base of the fixture. Be careful not to touch your eyes while doing this!

A Phillips head screwdriver

A thin pointed knife

A ladder

Soft cloth

A bucket

Once the light bulb is unscrewed, use the thin pointed knife and prise it off the socket. Again, turn the light bulb counterclockwise as viewed from the top.

Once the light bulb is off the socket, use the ladder to get it down from the ceiling. If the bulb is too heavy to cart away, put the ladder between the How to Remove a Broken Light Bulb bulb and the socket and use a crowbar to break the plastic seal around the neck of the light bulb and remove it from the socket. As soon as the light bulb is removed, place it in the bucket. Wet the cloth and wring it out. Wipe the outer shell of the new light bulb with the wet cloth. Replace the light bulb in the socket and screw it in. Replace the socket cover. Turn the light bulb back on by reversing the process: unscrew the light bulb from the socket by using the Phillips head screwdriver, prise it off the socket with the thin pointed knife and replace it in the socket.
